Insulin resistance helps us to understand the epidemic of obesity and type II diabetes in our country. Fueled by dietary carbohydrates this pro-inflammatory condition leads to many other diseases of modern society, including, the metabolic syndrome, lipid and cholesterol disorders, hypertension, heart attack, stroke, premature aging, depression, cancer, GI disease, arthritis, PCOS and infertility.
Insulin resistance prevalence does appear to mirror the epidemic of obesity seen here in America. 2008 data demonstrate that 65% or 2/3 rd's of the U.S. population are obese or overweight and that number continues to increase.
A relatively new medical condition unfamiliar to the general population and often unrecognized by the healthcare profession lead to further underestimates of this condition.
Teaching patients how to make better food choices, based on carbohydrate content of food, controls hunger and appetite, promotes weight loss and improves health. Dr. Gerber speaks frequently both publicly and on TV about these important issues to patients and other healthcare professionals.
A physical examination and blood work, including a two-hour glucose tolerance test, will help to detect insulin resistance and the metabolic syndrome.
Medical advances and updates
For some patients, medication addressing insulin resistance and weight loss has proven useful. Metforman or Glucophage, used for years in diabetics, can help those with the metabolic syndrome loose weight.
Byetta, FDA approved in 2005, is a brand new class of type II diabetes drug, discovered from the Gila Monster Lizard. Byetta improves insulin production and has been helping diabetics to lose weight by reducing hunger.
